nahwärme-eichkamp.berlin eG is one of the few cooperatives in Germany that is planning a cold local heating network in existing buildings. The local heating network is to be implemented in several modular construction phases. The founding of the cooperative was preceded by project funding from 2019-2023 as part of the KfW energy-efficient urban redevelopment program.
The cooperative was founded in July 2025.
Roles within the cooperative:
- Members: Acquire at least one cooperative share and pay an entry fee, are invited to the General Assembly and elect the Board of Directors.
- Board: There are to be three board members who currently work on a voluntary basis. The Executive Board convenes and chairs General Meetings. It reports to the Supervisory Board.
- Supervisory Board: The Supervisory Board works on an honorary basis, monitors the Executive Board and sets up committees.
There are currently 75 members, including two public institutions: the settlers' association with its clubhouse and a Protestant kindergarten.
Board members:
Sabine Drewes, Communication and Customer Relations
Reiner Wild, Finances
Marcus Schuchardt. Technology

The Board of Directors works together on the technical, financial and organizational development of the cooperative.
Several construction phases are planned. Whether construction phases are developed depends on the connection density of heat consumers. Development can be started from a connection density of approx. 40 percent with 15 - 20 subscribers.
Currently (as of summer 2025), a project outline for the first construction phase has been submitted to the Berlin funding portal BENE2 for investment cost funding. The cooperative is waiting for an invitation to submit an application
Planned investment costs:
Total investment: EUR 1,230,000
Cooperative's own funds: EUR 260,000
Expected BENE funding: EUR 615,000
Other subsidies: EUR 0
Borrowing: EUR 355,000
The members acquire at least one cooperative share of EUR 500 and pay an entry fee of EUR 500. The cooperative has received a start-up grant of € 30,000 from the state of Berlin.
The connection customers (exclusively members) of the local heating pay a connection price of € 13,000 net. The expected mixed heat price will be 16 - 18 cents net per KWh.
Two further construction phases are planned, for which feasibility studies must first be carried out.
A cold local heating network is planned. It is based on geothermal probes that are installed in the ground below the road. The heat from the ground is distributed via the network's heat pipes. The connected buildings will be equipped with decentralized heat pumps. These raise the temperature to the level required for each individual building (up to 70°C in the flow) and supply the households with fossil-free heat.
In BA 1, there will probably be 20 geothermal boreholes and probes of 100 m each as well as a pipe network for 20 connected households. All technical systems, including the decentralized heat pumps, will remain the property of the cooperative.
Connection of the energy consumers:
All energy customers must be members of the cooperative. Those members who are located on the route of the local heating network must connect to it and pay a connection fee of €13,000.
