In 2014, building artist Markus Zilker (einzueins Architektur) and process facilitator Gernot Tscherteu (realitylab) developed the idea of a Gleis 21 housing project. But it would take until January 2015 for the group of actual founders to form. Once this group of people interested in building groups had begun to breathe life into the Gleis 21 idea, they were able to win the bidding process for a plot of land at Helmut-Zilk-Park in early summer. With the "Gleis 21 housing project" association founded in May 2015, the group created a framework in which ideas were spun and discarded, although the key points soon became clear: We want to organize ourselves sociocratically and focus on communal rather than individual ownership. After a lot of planning work, group expansions and fun on the web, the long-awaited move in took place in 2019. Our members are a diverse bunch - couples, singles, parents, children, young and old, people with a migration background, people with a variety of professions and skills.
